Red Bull, Twisties, and a playlist of all your favourite 90s bangers. This is how you road trip, people.

Destiny’s Child bellows out of the speakers of Ollie’s Dodge Charger as the wind blows through our hair. Ivy sings into a fake microphone, loudly and out of tune, as I swing one arm out the window. My other arm firmly grips the wheel as we leave the big city behind us, the lights and noise becoming softer as our voices get louder. Hitting the open road, we let go of all our inhibitions and feel rejuvenated as our Soul Sisters, Michelle, Kelly, and some chick called Beyoncé, remind us that “I’m a survivor, I’m not gon’ give up”. If you don’t understand that reference, shame on you.

Sure, it’s not much of a road trip from Sydney to Palm Beach, but it is nice to get away from the traffic and hustle and bustle of the city. To be honest, I do feel bad about leaving Reaver, stuck with no other option but to spend Christmas with his dad and wife number four, but I needed to this for Ivy, and I think he understands that. So did Ollie and Bianca when I told them of my plan to get Ivy out of the city for a couple of days. Ollie even generously lent us his car for the holiday.

As Ivy and I head down the motorway, the city behind us becomes smaller and smaller. I feel my mind become clearer as the city in the rearview mirror becomes a mirage. I watch Ivy as she tries to sing along to the classics, her blonde, curly hair floating out the window as she glances back at me, smiling.

God, I love that smile.

“What are you staring at?” she asks, smiling angelically as she catches my stare.

“Nothing,” I reply. “I’m just happy to see you happy, is all.”

Ivy leans over and hugs me tightly, distracting me a moment from the road ahead of us.

“Thank you.”

“For what?” I ask.

“For doing this for me. I don’t know what your history is with your family or why you always change the subject whenever they’re bought up, but –”

“I do not change the subject. What song should we listen to next? I’m thinking keep this girl power alive with a little Spice Girl action.”

“See?!” Ivy says, pointing out my unsubtle attempt to change the topic of conversation away from my family. “All I’m trying to say is, thank you for swallowing your pride and taking me away from … well, you know who.”

I look back at Ivy and smile, unsure of what to say.

It’s not that I have a problem with my family; we actually have a good relationship. I mean, they’re a little unbalanced at times, but I’m not intentionally trying to hide them. There’s more to our story than what meets the eye, and I’m afraid if Ivy knew what I was really trying to hide, she might look at me differently – and boy, do I love the way she looks at me.
